Which Subscription Apps Shopify Stores Use in 2026

We scanned Shopify stores to see which subscription apps appeared on live storefronts, then counted the detected installs by app.

We detected a subscription app on 12,853 Shopify stores, and Seal Subscriptions was the most common app in that detected group at 28.6%. Appstle followed at 23.9%, Recharge at 22.1%, and Shopify Subscriptions at 5.2%.

This is not a market-share report for all Shopify. It is a storefront scan of stores in the segments we were researching, so it answers a narrower question: which subscription apps showed up when subscription signals were visible on those stores.

What We Counted

We scanned 78,885 Shopify stores between 2026-08-13 and 2026-09-05. A store counted here only when we detected a subscription app signal on the storefront.

The scan found 12,853 stores with a detected subscription app. Shares below are calculated inside that detected group, not across every scanned store.

The result is useful because most comparison pages explain which subscription apps they recommend. That is not the same as showing what stores actually use. Recommendation lists can help shortlist tools, but detected usage helps merchants ask better questions before they migrate, install, or rebuild a subscription program.

Results

Seal Subscriptions: 3,670 stores, 28.6%.

Appstle: 3,075 stores, 23.9%.

Recharge: 2,836 stores, 22.1%.

Shopify Subscriptions: 669 stores, 5.2%.

Kaching Subscriptions: 493 stores, 3.8%.

Loop: 367 stores, 2.9%.

Bold: 291 stores, 2.3%.

Skio: 255 stores, 2.0%.

Recurpay: 247 stores, 1.9%.

PayWhirl: 228 stores, 1.8%.

Firmhouse: 206 stores, 1.6%.

Awtomic: 122 stores, 0.9%.

The main pattern is concentration at the top of the list. That does not prove the most common apps are better for every store. It does show that a merchant comparing subscription apps should test the everyday workflows of the largest installed bases, then compare smaller tools against a specific need.

How We Measured This

We scanned public Shopify storefronts from 2026-08-13 to 2026-09-05. We identified subscription apps from theme extension scripts and from selling plans visible on product pages.

The sample is not random. It comes from stores selected for Progus research campaigns: UK stores with subscription signals, stores in the Netherlands, and stores with store locator signals. Because of that, these shares describe those segments, not all of Shopify.

We also counted Shopify Subscriptions separately from third-party apps. Some stores block selling plan reads or hide frontend signals, so every app count here should be treated as a lower bound.

What This Means for Merchants

  1. Start with the workflow, not the ranking. If your store only needs subscribe and save on replenishment products, a common lightweight app may be enough. If you need migration, retention flows, local payment handling, or complex customer portal behavior, test those workflows directly before comparing price.
  2. Do not assume popularity equals fit. The top apps are visible because many stores run them, but the scan does not measure churn, support quality, payment success, or merchant satisfaction. We did not measure those outcomes in this dataset.
  3. Check native and third-party options separately. Shopify Subscriptions appears as its own group in the scan. That matters because some stores can stay closer to Shopify's native subscription stack, while others need a dedicated app for portal controls, migrations, integrations, or regional payment needs.
  4. Use detected usage as a due-diligence prompt. Before choosing an app, inspect stores with a similar product type, payment mix, and operational complexity. Then ask whether the app handles your exact subscription model, not just whether it appears in a top-app list.

Progus Subscriptions is one option to review if you want to compare this data against a newer subscription app. Its current public pricing starts with a Free plan for stores under 500 USD in monthly subscription revenue, then Growth at 29 USD per month and Pro at 99 USD per month.

FAQ

Which subscription app is most common in this scan?

Seal Subscriptions is the most common detected app in this scan, with 3,670 stores and 28.6% of detected subscription app installs.

Does this show the market share of Shopify subscription apps?

No. The sample is not random, and the shares are calculated only among 12,853 stores where we detected a subscription app. It describes the scanned segments, not the whole Shopify ecosystem.

Why is Shopify Subscriptions listed next to third-party apps?

We counted Shopify Subscriptions separately because some stores use Shopify's native subscription option instead of an external subscription app. That keeps native usage from being mixed into third-party app counts.

Can a store use subscriptions without being counted here?

Yes. If a store blocks selling plan reads, hides relevant scripts, or has no detectable storefront signal, our scan can miss it. That is why the counts are lower bounds.

How should I use this list when choosing an app?

Use it to build a shortlist and questions for testing. Check whether the app supports your product model, customer portal needs, migration path, payment methods, and reporting needs before installing.
